Online Map Server: Help Page

How it works

The Map Server is composed of two parts; a single web page and a mapping program that enables a web server to produce maps. When the Map Server is started, the web page is downloaded on to the local computer and the mapping program and web server are initialised.

The web page includes a series of interactive tools that allow the user to create different maps. Whenever these tools are used, the web page communicates with the mapping program on the web server and a new map is created. The new map is then sent by the web server to the local machine where it is incorporated within the original web page.

The Interface

The interface provides a map display, a series of map tools and a range of options for creating personalised maps.

Search for a Town

The "Search for a Town" tool will locate and zoom to a town that is typed into the text box next to the find town button.

  1. Type the name of a town into the space provided.
  2. Select the appropriate State from the drop down list.
  3. Click on the find town button and the map will zoom to the location specified.

If the map does not zoom to the location specified it means that it is not in the list. It is important to type the exact name of the town including the state in order for the map server to find the town. i.e. "canberra", is the text string that is required for the map server to find and zoom to Canberra. A complete listing of towns is available in Adobe PDF format.

Search within a Distance

The "Search within a Distance" tool will select all the services displayed on the map within the distance specified in the space provided.

  1. Click on the "Select within" radio button.
  2. Specify the distance (by default the distance will be in kilometres).
  3. Click the map in the centre of the search area required. The list of selected services will then be displayed.

If the query does not return with the correct type of services listed, you will need to change the type of services displayed on the map and then repeat the distance query again.
